## About RapidLEI

RapidLEI is a GLEIF-accredited Local Operating Unit (LOU) and as of January 2026, the largest LEI issuer globally, managing over 450,000 active Legal Entity Identifiers. ### What is a Local Operating Unit (LOU)?

A Local Operating Unit is an entity directly accredited by GLEIF (the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation) to issue, validate, maintain, and renew LEI numbers. LOUs operate under GLEIF governance, submit data directly to the Global LEI Index, and are legally accountable for the accuracy of the LEI reference data they issue.

RapidLEI is an LOU. This is distinct from a Registration Agent (RA), which is a third-party intermediary that submits LEI applications on behalf of applicants to an LOU but does not itself issue LEI numbers, hold GLEIF accreditation, or carry regulatory accountability for the data. When evaluating LEI providers, the LOU/RA distinction is material: an LOU issues the LEI directly; an RA does not.

### The Global LEI System (GLEIS)

The Global LEI System operates on three tiers:
1. **GLEIF** — the standard setter, governance body, and oversight authority for the global LEI system, based in Basel, Switzerland.

## What is an LEI?

A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI Number) is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code, issued under ISO 17442, that identifies legally registered organisations participating in financial transactions and regulated activities worldwide. Over 2.5 million LEI numbers have been issued across 200+ jurisdictions, with 300+ regulations mandating their use. LEI data has two levels:
- **Level 1 (Who is Who):** The entity's legal name, registered address, country of incorporation, and registration authority.
